Choosing potatoes for my garden

 It is kinda sad to see the end of this years garden. Yet fun to collect and put away the bounty. I have been so happy with the potato garden doing well this year. When I go to some of the local places that sell from there home. I see my potatoes came out bigger and healthier than theirs. It puts a smile on my face.

What I learned from this year is, some of the exotic potatoes should have been planted closer. I did not have enough info on them to know they were small fingerling type of potatoes. So they will be planted closer together next spring.

My plans for next year

I will continue to grow potatoes from TPS (True botanical seeds).

 What I am looking for is productive sustainable potatoes to add to my collection. So this winter I will continue to research and buy some, that may be more productive and produce berry's. .I placed an order for the ones below. They will come some time in October. So I will have to store them for the winter.

 Desiree  ( 95-100 days, Mid season)
 I have read it is a red-skinned main-crop potato originally bred in the Netherlands in 1962. Disease resistance It has a waxy, yellow flesh with a distinctive flavor. I have seen many in the UK grow it on videos. It seems very productive.  I have also seen potato berry's and TPS seed collected from it. 
 General purpose potato (best for Mash potatoes) 

Purple Majesty (85 days, Early season)
Plant should be under 2 foot tall. With a spread of about 12-15 inches.
Purple inside and out. Said to be full of antioxidants The tubers may be small in size. Will update after I grow them. This plant can set berry's for TPS seed collection.

Viking Purple (90 to 100 days, Mid season)
 Pink/red-splashed purple skin, white flesh.
Small-to-medium spreading plant, yet it produces 3 1/2 to 4-inch round tubers some times larger. These tubers grow near the soil surface so keep the ground covered to prevent greening.  Needs the soil to be lose and fertile.
 Good for baking or mashing

Crescent-shaped small 4-5 inch tubers, yellow/tan skin with yellow flesh.

dark yellow flesh tan to yellow like skin. Medium size tubers.
I have read it very productive, and has a buttery sweet flavor.
Good general purpose potato.  (boiling, mashing, frying, or baking).

True potato seed berrys

I have 1 small berry that fell off of a sister plant to the top berry in my hand. The top berry is still growing on the vine. What is amazing is one looks like a Diploid shape. The other a tetraploid (round shape)

This 2nd photo both berry's are from the same plant. Yet one has the round shape, the other a strawberry like shape. 

The plants have smaller and less fleshy leaves, like other diploid types of potatoes. They have dark wood looking stems.The leaves also have deep veins and the color of purple shows up in them. It is a beautiful plant.

 The berry still attached in photo number 1 above is from the plant on the left. The other 2 berry's in the 2nd photo above are from the plant on the right.

 This is the only other plant that was in bloom at the time So it may be the pollen partner to the  round berry. I did try to cross the 2 pants. But not sure if this was the result. We had so much rain I only had 2 tries at pollination,. I did a cross with the center plant to the left one. above And  this lighter color flower below to the right plant. .

This is what the plants  look like now..The stems have been pushed to the ground by wind and rain. They are still growing. So I have hope the tubers will continue to grow under the soil.

I have video recorded the 2 times I tried to cross pollinate the plants. but have not put them together yet. I will post a link to it when I do. 

Trying new seeds

This years garden will be full of many new things from around the world.

I ordered bitter melon on the 28th of April. I did not realize it was coming from China. It arrived on the 16th of May. I only planted 2 seeds for now. Not sure how productive the plant will be. So I will add one the the ground also. I do this for seed identification also. I was interested in this plant because of what I read about it being good for people with diabetic conditions. But after further research. I have learned you must pic and eat it before it is fully ripe. It is toxic when it turns orange. I should have done more research on it before purchasing. But I am glad I learned more before I just grew and ate with out knowledge.

 

I planted a sampling of seed I still need to put in the garden. This year I have many special things, I never grew before. I am so thankful for the internet.  It opens our eyes to knew food from all over the world. I was lucky to get seed for the kajari melon too. It is from India. But I did not know I would receive treated seed, Something the government requires to stop import of insect or virus. I assume this is not required from all country's. Because the bitter melon, was not treated seed.

The photo above is of the (TPS) True potato seeds. I started the seed back in March. And transplanted to the garden bed this month. They are really happy to be in the ground. Even with all the rain here in Missouri. They are growing fast. But no where near as fast as planing pull sprouts and tubers. But that is ok. I love all the different variety's. I will have a multitude of colors.

many of the TPS plants are ready to bloom. They are 14-18 inches tall.

Growing true potato seed TPS

TPS True Potato seeds come from a fruit that develops of some potatoes.
They are like a small tomato in size. But not edible. You collect the seed from the fruit to grow new plants next year. I will write more about the fruit when my potato plants develop there this summer or fall. 

On March 7, 2015 I placed 1 seed in each cup. Planting 4 cups of each potato seed. The cups contain a sterile seed starter mix.

On March 13 all 4 cups of what is called 320370 sprouted and 1 cup with Muru
I placed a grow light over them to start greening them up. I will keep them moist as they could take 3 weeks to sprout.

I planted more of them today.These were spread from top to bottom in rows.True potato seed need to be started around the same time as tomato seed. Which is about 8 weeks before they are put in there place out side. They will be taken out when the weather is nice to get them use to real sunlight. And outdoor conditions. I do not have a green house, so they are kept under grow lights indoors.

My first sprouts were placed in the ground yesterday the 212th of March. The ground temperature was in the high 40's, at a level of 6-7 inched deep. Out side temps were in the 60's. But I put a bird net over them And keep a shade cloth on them at night and Today we had rain. I kept them covered. 

Temp was 49-55f. .3/8 inches of rain.
